The method
How to make it
Fill a highball glass to the top with ice.
Squeeze in the lime juice and drop the spent shell right into the glass.
Pour the ginger beer over the ice, leaving an inch of room.
Float the dark rum slowly over the back of a spoon so it sits on top like a storm cloud. That layer is the drink's whole name, do not stir it away.
Serve with a straw and let the drinker do the mixing.
The serve
How to present it
Highball, dark layer on top, lime wedge on the rim. The pour is the show, so do the rum float at the table if anyone is watching. The spicier the ginger beer the better, the sweet stuff makes it a soda pop.

Swaps & variations
Swap the rum for bourbon and you have a Kentucky Mule with attitude. Add two dashes of Angostura bitters to deepen the storm. If you only have white rum it still tastes right, it just loses the weather effect, pour it and call it Partly Cloudy.
